Trail coordinator could bring economic growth

Trail coordinator could bring economic growth
POTSDAM, N.Y. -- "I think when you are outside you just feel free, your mind can drift - you find enjoyment in simplicity," said Mary Zeigler, a North Country resident.

But is there a way to tap into the untouched landscape of the North Country and turn a profit? Some community members think so.

Debbie Christy, President of the St. Lawrence County Snowmobile Association said, "There is definitely potential and all we need is for someone to help us put it together."

Although neighboring counties have a position that manages their trail systems - St. Lawrence County relies solely on volunteers.
A recent push has been made to try and convince the St. Lawrence Finance Committee to set aside money for a trail coordinator - a position that could help the county generate a profit from recreational trails.

"People aren't really leaving the Adirondacks so much to get up into the areas like Potsdam, Ogdensburg and Massena, and so we kind of miss out on the tourism dollars that are being spent down in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake," said Michael Klein, the owner of Ware on Earth.

"And St. Lawrence County, we have all the same assets and qualities but we haven't gone the distance to try to develop it so we can bring tourist into the area," said Christy.

Those who support the new position say volunteers can only do so much - this new position would give the system more credibility, making it easier to manage and expand, but the idea does draw some criticism.

"When you bring in a position, you add a little more red tape, which isn't always the answer," said Klein.

He warned that it's possible the rules could get more complicated for trail users once the county steps in. It is yet to be determined if the 2010 budget will have the funds for the position.
