Excitement is high as college students are returning to school, wondering what this year holds. And at SUNY Canton no one is more excited than the automotive technology majors. Because beginning this year, SUNY Canton is joining forces with the Subaru Corporation. Our Cara Thomas says this partnership will not only provide new and unique opportunities for the students, but also for local Subaru dealerships.
CANTON, N.Y. -- "Raise your hand if you've ever had one of those times where it just seems like everything comes together just right. Anybody? Yeah, this is how this Subaru thing has gone," said Brandon Baldwin, an Automotive Technology Assistant Professor at SUNY Canton.
It's a match made in heaven between the Subaru Corporation and SUNY Canton, that students, faculty and Subaru representatives say they can't wait to kick off. Beginning this semester, SUNY Canton's automotive lab is now officially a new training center for Subaru. Which they say is a win-win situation for everyone involved.
Barry Wells, Subaru Distributors Corporation's Executive Vice President, said, "Not only does it give us a place closer to a third of our dealer body to get trained, but it gives us the opportunity to home grow our own technicians."
This project is a huge investment for Subaru, providing more than half a million dollars in equipment, technology and new cars, giving students an educational experience of a lifetime.
Auto Technician Major Brandon Crandall said, "It's a big deal. It's going to be nice to work with stuff like this, new technology instead of just working on old Chevys."
Dealership owners say one of the biggest challenges in their business is finding qualified technicians. And through this partnership, Subaru shouldn't be faced with that struggle any longer. Students will leave SUNY Canton with not only a college education, but a Subaru certification already under the belts. College students say it's a relief that Subaru dealerships will welcome them with open arms.
"I have dealers all over the state of New York that has heard about this from the dealer council. And they all want that opportunity so that when the students graduate, they can have a job," said Wells.
SUNY Canton is the only college partnered with the Subaru Corporation, making it a one of a kind experience.
