SACKETS HARBOR, N.Y. -- A lot of people enjoy walking around the Village of Sackets Harbor, but a special group arrived Wednesday just to be able to take this walk.
The Volkssport Association is a national group that gathers just to walk around various sites in the U.S. and Canada. Wednesday's group of 44 walkers arrived at the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Discovery Center where they followed a mapped 10K course around the village.
The Sackets course is part of the 1812 Walk Series and anyone competing in the series can receive a special pin to add to their collection.
"There's nothing better than going out and saying, hey I did this walk. You earn patches and pins through AVA and the pins are gorgeous," said Daryl Giles, Great Lakes Seaway Trail Volkssport Association President.
The Great Lakes Seaway Trail 1812 Walks in nine communities along the byway are free and open to the public through November.
