BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- A different kind of veterans group gathered on Binghamton's Front Street, one with the goal of promoting an end to conflict.
Veterans for Peace commemorated the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, also known as Armistice Day, which marks the conclusion of World War I. The group rang a bell not only to remember the peace that day declared, but in hopes that all conflicts may come to an end.
"What we're trying to do is bring attention to the fact that Armistice Day, or Veterans Day as it's called now, was made for peace not for war. And not for promoting war. We should get out of the wars. We don't need to sacrifice all this young men and women over there in these foreign countries that we're not invited to that we're occupying," said Navy veteran William Donohue.
Veterans Day, which became a legal holiday in 1954, had originally been known as Armistice Day since a presidential proclamation in 1919.
