ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Aside from Robbie Nichols' firing, the future of First Arena remains unknown. The building is owned by Southern Tier Economic Development or STED.
But Elmira Jackals' team owner, Mustafa Afr had been leasing it. In three years, he did not pay taxes on the property.
Last month, Afr paid more than $100,000 to avoid foreclosure. The recent payment was what he owed in back taxes and interest and is now considered a repurchase. However, the county legislature still has to vote whether or not to accept it.
"For this to become final, the repurchase has to be approved by the Chemung County Legislature so until that happens, this is still in the hands of the county," said Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli.
The County Legislature will vote on the payment at its meeting March 12th. If they choose to reject the payment, the county would then own the arena.
