Nearly $6 million was pumped into the local economy the first time the New York Jets held their summer training camp in Cortland. That was back in 2010. Now, after a year off and a new schedule that cuts practice time in half, businesses are eager to see what the financial impact will be. Our Tamara Lindstrom has the story.
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- With training underway, the fans are beginning to pour in, giving local businesses a reason to cheer on Gang Green.
"When the Jets came in on Thursday, it was very, very busy and very fun. We're making Jets cupcakes. They sold out the first day. A lot of kids really like them," said Karina Murphy, Blue Frog Coffee House owner.
"It's been pretty insane, especially days when they have practice. Last Saturday, they got rained out. It was pouring here and we sold out some more designs and some more sizes," said Steve Wineburg, owner of Bernard’s Custom Logo.
A welcome rush after last year's disappointing hiatus.
"Well, we have lots of merchandise stored from when they didn't show up last year, so we're happy to pull that out of storage and hopefully make some money with that this year," The Bling Store owner Jodie Wainwright said.
Hotels are sold out, restaurants are packed and business is booming thanks to Jets camp and one very marketable new addition.
"Very marketable. Everybody loves Tim Tebow. I'd say nine out of 10 shirts we're selling are Tebow mania shirts," said Wineburg.
And it's not just the visitors buying up the merchandise. Fans near and far can't get enough of the Tebow gear.
"I had a lady that called me from North Carolina about an hour ago. She said she'd called the Chamber of Commerce and asked if we had any merchandise having to do with Tebow," Wainwright said.
Making fans out of merchants ready to meet the seemingly insatiable, if temporary, demand.
The team was off Tuesday, but morning practices resume Wednesday at SUNY Cortland.
