ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A tragic turn of events for a group boating on the Seneca River Friday afternoon. It happened near Surbrook Road in Baldwinsville.
Emergency crews were called to the scene of a drowning just before five. State Police say two males, a female and a dog were on a boat. It became disabled and the dog jumped out to swim to shore. Police say the dog got tangled in seaweed and the woman jumped in to help the dog. One of the males then also jumped in with a life vest.
"Gets over to the female, who was able to get the dog released from the seaweed, and was able to get her to a buoy with the life vest," New York State Police Public Information Officer Jack Keller.
The woman and the dog survived. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The name of the deceased has not been released.
