WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- While having fun is the main theme for the weekend in Watkins Glen, giving back to the community is another top priority.
Racing legend Richard Petty was on hand Friday as Smithfield Packing Company and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union donated 30,000 pounds of meat to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
The event took place at Tops Friendly Markets, which also took part in the program.
Petty says one of his favorite parts of being involved in racing is giving back to the community.
“We’re so fortunate that we can go all over the country, we can see things we can do things, to come back and help people, maybe that’s why the good lord is looking out for us in the first place,” Petty said.
“This isn’t something that we often have available to us and having the option to have products such as protein, hams and other meats available to our agencies to select from just really helps to offer a nice well rounded assorted items for the agencies that we serve,” said Missy Smith of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
The Food Bank of the Southern Tier helps more than 11,000 people every week.
