It's the biggest weekend of the year at Watkins Glen International. Drivers took to the track on Sunday for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Race. It's an event that draws hardcore fans from all over. While he couldn't meet each of the 80,000 fans at the track, our Bill Mich found some of the fans who has a love for NASCAR that can't be denied.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- When looking for the best fans at Watkins Glen, it is important to note that age and gender made no difference. Young and old, men and women, had no issues showing their allegiance to certain drivers.
YNN sought out the top three, most hardcore fans we could find. Number three is a fan that eluded our interview, but the tales of his fan power made him worth for a spot on the list.
"There is a guy across the way from us, if Junior wins on Sunday, he is going to take a spatula, put it in the fire, but 88 on it, and brand Junior on his butt," said Zack Willis, Williamson resident.
Not every fan needs to inflict physical pain upon themselves to make the list, but it certainly doesn't hurt.
Our number two fan is no slouch. Him and his wife made their way to Watkins Glen all the way from Australia to cheer on their favorite driver, defending Watkins Glen Champion, Marcos Ambrose.
"I think we were in the air for about 26 hours by the time we got to Ithaca. I followed it for many years, but my wife just can't stop with the telly. She's got to have the telly on when there is a NASCAR race on," said Joe McGinnes, Australia resident.
Finally, the most hardcore NASCAR fan at the Glen, is a guy who has been making his own customer t-shirt for the past 13 years, just without the shirt.
"Duct tape, mail box letters, and rest is it. You walk around for awhile, get burnt, peel it off," said Kenny Hunt, Watkins Glen resident.
Rather than buying a t-shirt, this guy turned himself into the ultimate Dale Jr. fan by intentionally getting sun burned. Pain is not an option for this top fan.
"When you drink enough beer, nothing bothers you," noted Hunt.
It may not be every hardcore fan, but some of the best gems can always be found at Watkins Glen.
