SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Thousands of local kids have new supplies for the upcoming school year, thanks to an annual tradition in Syracuse.
More than 21,000 people were pre-registered to attend Mary Nelson's Youth Day Barbecue Saturday. The event provides backpacks filled with school supplies to all kids from Pre-K to college.
The barbecue has grown exponentially over the years and Nelson says it's only possible because of all the support from volunteers.
"They want to be here for our community and everybody here today, everybody here is giving back. They can't collect any money. They have to give back. It's all free," Nelson said.
This was the 11th year for the youth day barbecue.
