ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Colleges are getting ready for students to return for the fall semester, and at Clarkson, resident assistants are learning about fire safety. Potsdam fire fighters and state fire officials came to Clarkson on Monday. They taught the students about fires, how to use a fire extinguisher, and what it feels like to be in a smoke filled room.
Fire officials say they do this training with RAs every year. They say fire safety is extremely important at all colleges, and it's also important at home.
"One thing that we do stress is it's not just for here, fire safety isn't something you should just practice at school, it's something that should be practiced wherever you are. Fire does not discriminate. And it's very important to keep that in mind," said Christopher Taylor, Fire Protection Specialist.
All students will be returning to campus soon. Classes at Clarkson University, SUNY Potsdam, and Saint Lawrence University begin next week. Classes at SUNY Canton began on Monday.
