Zuckerman says he's not running for NY Senate

NEW YORK (AP) - Real estate tycoon and New York Daily News publisher Mortimer Zuckerman says he won't challenge Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand for her U.S. Senate seat.

In an interview published on the newspaper's Web site on Tuesday, Zuckerman said he had chosen not to run as a possible candidate because of personal and professional reasons.

The 72-year-old said "major political figures" had encouraged him to consider running.

He said family responsibilities and a new job as CEO of Boston Properties Inc. left little time for campaigning or working in Washington. He said being a Senator "demands unhindered attention."

Zuckerman is not registered with any party but would likely have run on the Republican line.

Harold Ford Jr. said on Monday he had decided not to run in the Democratic primary.
