The Spa Spot: Rain washes four Friday races off the turf
Due to wet conditions Friday, NYRA has moved four of the five scheduled turf races to the main track.
First post for the Party at the Spa twilight program is 2:30 p.m.
The $100,000 Irish Linnet for New York-breds, the sixth race of the day, is the only one of the nine races on the program that will be run on grass.
NYRA was able to get through the first six days of the 2012 season without losing a turf race. The switch in surfaces will result in a number of scratches and smaller fields in those races.
The second race will be run at the same distance on the main track, 5 1/2 furlongs. The fifth and the seventh races were scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the Mellon Turf Course, but will be run at 1 1/8 miles on the main track. The ninth, scheduled for one mile on the inner turf course, will be run at seven furlongs on the main track.
The change in distances for the final three races is because of the track configuration. NYRA does not run races at one mile and 1 1/16 miles on its 1 1/8 miles dirt track at Saratoga because the starting gate would be too close to the first turn at 1 1/16 miles and on the turn for a one-mile race.
