The Spa Spot: 'Graveyard' claims another victim
Savvy bettors cashed in Saturday by betting against Stopshoppingmaria in the first race.
The Repole Stable filly, making her second start off a long layoff, was running in a 5 1/2 furlong optional claimer after placing second in a minor stake at the same distance at Monmouth Park. Sent off as the 2-5 favorite, she was stuck behind horses until the eighth pole and couldn't capitalize when jockey Javier Castellano found an opening and finished fourth.
Madame Giry won the race and paid $25.80. With Stopshoppingmaria finishing off the board, show bettors cashed with payoffs of $10.20, $6.70 and $17.20 for the first three finishers.
