The Spa Spot: Wrapping up Day 21
The combination of excellent weather and the appealing giveaway of a picnic blanket produced a crowd of 52,251 for the first day of the second half of the 2012 season.
The on-track crowd was up 14 percent over last year and it came to play, driving the on-track handle up 16 percent to $3,673,707.
The total handle was up a healthy 11 percent over the 2011 figures to $15,495,143.
- With four of the six turf races moved to the main track, only four favorites won during the 11-race program. Mo matter for the Pick Six players taking a shot at the pool that included a $96,669 carryover: there were 263 winners of $1,622.
- Longtime NFL coach Bill Parcells, a regular at the track for several years, presented the trophy for the Grade 2 Adirondack.
- Trainer Todd Pletcher won the Grade 2 Adirondack with the impressive Kauai Katie and leads the trainer's standings with 19 winners. Pletcher is always a force with 2-year-olds, but with 13 wins with juveniles in 21 days he's well on his way of topping his 18 wins in 2010.
- Apprentice Wilmer Garcia picked up his seventh victory of the season with Alykela ($48.60) in the third.
