The Spa Spot: Morning Breeze
This is the the time of the meet where everyone starts to realize that the end is in sight. Today's card is the finale of the fourth full six-day week and pretty much the beginning of Travers week. Another 10-race program. Six on turf. First post is 1 p.m.
- There are four maiden special weight races on the program. The first race is for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/8 miles. This group of six includes After the Bell, a Darley second-time starter whose dam is a Grade 1 winner and he is a full brother to a Grade 1 winner, Country Star. Nick Zito sends out Tiz Yankee, who has been second seven times in nine starts. Perhaps today is the day.
- The feature is the fifth race, the $100,000 Union Avenue for New York-bred fillies and mares going six furlongs. Little doubt that the accomplished Risky Rachel is likely to go off as the favorite; she won by 10 lengths here last summer and usually is in the mix. The gigantic 4-year-old Willet was schooling in the paddock the other day and looking mighty impressive. She has only made four career starts and this is her first outing since December. Her PPs show three wins and a second in those four starts.
