Tri it Again: Final preparations before Iron Girl Triathlon

1,300 women will be taking over Brewerton this weekend for the annual Iron Girl Triathlon. We've been following some of those athletes throughout the season as they train with the Fleet Feet Triathlon training program. Our Katie Gibas is one of those athletes. She checked in with some of the women at the last CNY Tri Club's weekly practice series to see how they're preparing with just a few hours until the race.

CENTRAL NEW YORK -- You can feel the excitement and energy as many of these women are preparing for the Iron Girl Triathlon. This is the second year for Sarah Bettinger and Laura Currey.

"Training has been a lot of fun. It's been more intense as I already have a knowledge base to start off with. And I've been building on that. My workouts have been much more intense. I've stuck to the schedule more, and really just watched my progress develop," said Laura Currey, a Cicero resident.

Sarah Bettinger, a Baldwinsville resident added, "It's taking yourself to those points of exhaustion and then pushing beyond those. That mental game, that mental portion of doing this endurance kind of athleticism that's something where I've found new avenues of my personality. Even though sometimes you want to cry, you just get back on the bike and ride."

Going into the final hours before the race, Bettinger and Currey can feel the difference a year makes.

"I'm really excited but not quite as terrified as I was my first time. I know more of what to expect," said Currey.

Bettinger added, "I'm just so excited, whereas last year, there was the nervousness. This year, there's really just nothing more than pure excitement.

And even though this triathlon season isn't over yet, Bettinger and Currey are already thinking about next year, where they plan to go even bigger and better.

"We're all planning on doing 70.3 next summer, so our training for that will start much earlier. And we won't take as much of a break off after Iron Girl," said Currey.

Bettinger added, "70.3 next year and my first marathon in November. This has been a journey of kind of baby steps for me. First it was the Corporate Challenge. Then it was Iron Girl. And as I keep doing these things, I keep finding this strength, so I'm just like, 'Why not?' So four years, I think that's reasonable, four years to Ironman."

For all 1,300 women their weeks of training will pay off as they Tri it Again at the Iron Girl Triathlon.

The Iron Girl Triathlon is this Sunday at Oneida Shores County Park.

Our Katie Gibas is one of those athletes competing. If you want to check in on Katie and her teammates' training progress, check out her blog "Tri it Again."
