SCOTLAND -- A decision has been reached in the case of Lockerbie bomber, Abdel Baset al-Megrahi. CNN is reporting al-Megrahi will be released from prison, but the Scottish government says it will not announce the decision to the public until Thursday.

Al-Megrahi was the sole person convicted in 2001 of taking part in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988. The question at hand is whether or not to release al-Megrahi on compassionate grounds because he has terminal prostate cancer.

Thirty-five of the bombing victims were students from Syracuse University. Several others were from upstate New York.

The father of one of the students killed told us by phone he is against al-Megrahi's release and should completely serve his sentence.

"I don't want anyone, even mass murderers to have a terminal diseases like cancer, but he did murder 270 innocent civilians and any compassionate thoughts that may pass through my mind are quickly erased by the thought of those innocent people falling to their deaths from 39,000 feet above Lockerbie, Scotland," said Robert Hunt.

Hunt also says politics and oil money, not compassion, are fueling the decision to release the bomber.
