Local postal worker positions to be eliminated next month
They knew it was coming and now they know when. A group of employees at the Elmira Post Office on Sullivan Street received notices this week that their positions will be eliminated next month. It's all part of an effort by the postal service to consolidate operations. Our Kaitlyn Lionti has more on the change and what's next for those affected.

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Another wave of notices hit the Elmira Post Office on Sullivan Street this week. This time, about 25 clerks will be impacted once the facility's remaining Delivery Bar Code Sorting machines are moved to other locations.
"As the machines go, so does the work associated with that machine. So some employees did receive a notice that their specific bid position has been abolished effective February 13th," said Karen Mazurkiewicz, a spokesperson for the United States Postal Service.
But just because their positions are eliminated doesn't mean their employment is. The next letters to go out will include options of where the impacted workers can relocate.
"Until we have a permanent placement for them, they will continue to report to work at their current location and we will work as quick as we can to find them new positions," said Mazurkiewicz.
And the union president says there's hope that the workers won't have to look far for their next opportunity.
"Currently we're in negotiations with the Albany district. There appears to be about 23 jobs in the Binghamton facility, so we're attempting to get the majority of the people placed there to keep the disturbance to their family life at a minimum," said John Dahl, President of the APW Union Local 2255.
But Dahl says although Binghamton is a better option than some, it's still isn't an ideal scenario for workers.
"It makes it more palatable. You know, it's still a long drive, the problem will come in that it's still a long drive and in the winter time, we all know what it's like here," Dahl said.
The postal service expects the letters with options for relocation to be sent out soon.
This group of employees won't be the only ones dealing with change.
The postal service says similar notices will go out to other groups once their positions are no longer necessary at the Elmira facility.
