POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The Potsdam Humane Society has been fundraising for years and now a private donation of $60,000 puts the animal shelter close to its one million dollar goal.
With the hopes of helping the shelter finalize its fundraising project, Barbara and Michael Maresca of St. Lawrence County have launched their own campaign. If the community can match their donation of $60,000, then the couple will donate another $60,000.
Organizers say although the recession has somewhat slowed their project, community support is still there.
Potsdam Humane Society Animal Behavior Specialist Anne Smith said, "In some ways, it seems difficult, but then on days like this, I turn around and say, 'wow it is possible.' So in this economy, I am amazed at the people in the North Country at how they are stepping up. It really is incredible."
Organizers plan to renovate the existing building, doubling it in size. The goal is to break ground this spring.
