OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Last year, one of the most sought-after shipwrecks in the Great Lakes was found. One of the men who made history will be telling his story Saturday in Oswego.
New York Sea Grant is teaming up with the Great Lakes Seaway Trail and the Oswego Maritime Foundation to present the 14th annual Great Lakes Underwater Day at SUNY Oswego. A variety of speakers will talk about various shipwrecks, lost fleets and even a floating classroom being built in Oswego.
But the highlight of the event will be diver Jim Kinnard. He and his partner found the Ontario, a British Revolutionary warship that many say is the Holy Grail of the Great Lakes.
"He's not only going to tell us the story of the wreck that's been known for generations and had books written about it, but he's going to show us the video and talk about finding it. He'll also talk about what it can now bring to light and to life about that ship that went down over 200 years ago," said Dave White of New York Sea Grant.
The program starts at 9 a.m. Saturday and there's still time to register.
