Two trials, 98 witnesses and the 24 hours of deliberations isn't the most surprising part of the Wayne Oxley saga. Oxley, who is accused of beating his neighbor to death in 2005, has been represented through county dollars each time he's been given a trial and as our Rachael Paradis tells us, it's added up to a hefty price tag that will come as a shock to many tax payers.

ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Deputy Treasurer Kevin Felt knows money and he knows that the costs associated with Wayne Oxley's trials has been hard for St. Lawrence County to handle.

Felt said, "Everything. All the cost associated with the trial is a county cost. "

Oxley is accused of beating his neighbor, Bernard Trickey Jr., to death in 2005. His conviction in 2006 was overturned and his retrial began in the middle of October. His trial, appeals, motions and re-trial have added up to an extensive price tag for the county. How much are we talking?

Felt said, "Looking back at 2006, the costs associated with the public defender was just under $100,000. In 2008, it was roughly $15,000 and in 2010, so far $60,000 has been spent. That has only brought us through October. There is still more to come from the public defenders billings."

Close to $200,000, an amount that Felt says will be shocking to most. For Felt and others who work with the budget, they know there is nothing they can do to prepare for a situation like this.

Felt said, "When you have these kinds of expenses that are unexpected it typically ends up getting added to the tax roll for the following year to recoup it. You would see an increase in your taxes."

The cost factor is something that could prevent Oxley from seeing a third trial. District Attorney Nicole Duve says she is not sure if she will try for the third time around.

Duve said, "A lot of thought has to be given as to where we go from here. Mr. Oxley was represented at the county tax payer expense and that's a factor. The next several days, couple weeks, I'll be assessing where we go from here."

For now, Oxley will remain out on $75,000 bail waiting patiently to find out what his future holds.
