JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Jefferson County inmates are now traveling farther than ever because of jail overcrowding.

Wednesday, the Seneca County Sheriff announced his county will house inmates from Jefferson County. They'll receive $85 per day, per inmate.

Jefferson County will be responsible for transportation and any medical costs for their inmates.

Sheriff John Burns says this is going to cost Jefferson County a great deal of money, but it's also going to cause fatigue.

Jefferson County Sheriff John Burns said, "These corrections officers are on the road constantly, they get tired, they get fatigued, they get sick, so then I have to back fill them with more overtime, so there's a lot of hidden cost in this that I don't think are being looked at buy our county leaders."

As of right now, there is no plan to expand the Jefferson County Jail. The Seneca County Jail also houses inmates from Ontario and Tompkins County, along with detainees from the U.S. Marshal's service.
