FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Fort Drum is doing some intense training this week and those in Northern Jefferson and Southern St. Lawrence counties will be hearing some loud bangs.

The 175th Air National Guard out of Baltimore, Maryland is on Fort Drum dropping 500 pound bombs out of planes for target training.

The 174th out of Syracuse has set up various objects out in the field for other units to come in and practice.

The Air National Guard says this is the only live range in the Northeast where real bombs can be dropped. So while it will make a lot of noise, the National Guard says the training is vital.

"Having that experience, someplace like this in a controlled environment before they go and have to do this the first time under attack is just invaluable to their chance of success over there," said NYANG 174th Fighter Wing Range Commander Fred Tomaselli.

The training is expected to last a couple of weeks.
