WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Local agencies and organizations in the Watertown area are teaming up to offer people a hot dinner for only a dollar.
The "Dollar Dinners" have served more than 10,000 people since starting in 2006. Churches and organizations like the Northern New York Community Foundation are teaming up with the Watertown Urban Mission to offer more than 30 different dinners this season at various locations. Coupons to eat for free are also available for people who use the Urban Mission Food Pantry.
Urban Mission Executive Director Erika Flint said, "Really the intent is not just for those who could otherwise afford, but really from all walks of life to sit in fellowship. So it might be someone making $100,000 a year sitting next to someone who's on public assistance."
NNY Community Foundation Executive Director Rande Richardson said, "It's a relatively small gift that sees great rewards. There's people that come and participate in this that would have no place to go for dinner if this wasn't being offered. "
The first "Dollar Dinner" will be this coming Wednesday at the All Souls Unitarian Church in Watertown
