CARTHAGE, N.Y. -- With the recent closing of the Mercy Care Center and Whispering Pines facility in Watertown, Jefferson County currently has no assisted living places at all.
But that will change soon. Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown has already started work on a facility in the city and now Carthage has officially broken ground on one as well.
The Meadowbrook Terrace will offer room for 60 seniors and also provide meals and a central area for events.
"Well, it's been a long time coming. There's been a lot of work that's gone into the whole process and we're very excited about getting it up and running and getting this housing for our residents because there is several housing issues in the area for our long-term residents," said Joseph Millard, Meadowbrook Terrace Administrator.
The facility is expected to create 40 new jobs for the Carthage area.
