ELLISBURG, N.Y. -- For Dennis DeLong it all happened in an instant. His home on South Landing Road caught fire around 9 p.m. Monday when he was home with his two small children.

Dennis DeLong said, "Just did what I had to do. I did what any loving caring person would do for their children or anybody else."

In a matter of moments, he grabbed his two children and carried them to safety.

Vicky DeLong said, "It's devastating to lose a home, but a home can be replaced. Kids can't, your husband can't, that's your family."

His wife, Vicky, was working when she got the call.

"I thought the kids and my husband were gone, I just ran," she said.

The DeLongs say they're thankful everyone is safe, but the road to recovery is looking rather tough.

"I lived there a long time. It has sentimental value there. Now I have nothing, but I can't say I have nothing, I have my children, my family, which is everything. Just nothing else," Dennis said.

Their son, Cody, is only six-weeks-old,and spent his first week in the NICU. Kyle is two and was just diagnosed with autism.

Vicky said, "Kyle, he's doing good, but he still knows he's out of his element, so I want to get him settled. Somewhere stable and steady."

The family has no insurance on the home, but says the outpouring of support from friends, family, the Red Cross and others has been surreal.

"I just want them to know that I thank them from the bottom of my heart for everything, they did what they could do," Vicky said.

Dennis said, "I've never felt that much love and care in my life."

And that's what the DeLongs believe will keep them going in the upcoming weeks.
