NORTH COUNTRY, N.Y. -- Congressman Bill Owens has presented a bill he hopes will keep post offices across the country open.
It's called the Community Postal Service Prevention and Cost Savings Act. It will require the postal service to review and consider relocating post offices into current retail facilities and municipal buildings.
Owens says the Postal Service needs to rethink its cost cutting strategy.
“The postal service had the opportunity to do things in many ways to cut costs and they simply have taken, if you will, the easy way out, knocking off communities that are in their minds, small, and simply not paying attention to the critical need for these facilities in most communities,” Owens said.
The bill includes all post offices, including facilities that have already been closed.
Owens says it makes the most sense for post offices to be joined with small 'mom and pop' stores, as these stores have closer ties to the community. But he says this bill is for anyone who is willing to participate.
