Toys for Tots still accepting donations

By: Cara Thomas

With Christmas just over a week away, many are still thinking about some extra presents they would like to buy for loved ones, while some children are just hoping to get one this year. Our Cara Thomas tells us about one program aimed at putting smiles on those kids' faces year after year.

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Don't be thrown by the white beard, the Santa hat or the Christmas joy because this man is not Santa Claus, but he might as well be. Raymond Cutway is the St. Lawrence County Coordinator for Toys for Tots and has been for nine years and helps bring toys to children in need during the Christmas season.

Cutway said, "The thing about it, here is, it's not about me. It's about helping the needy children. It's making kids have a Christmas, so there's a glimmer of hope for them."

Toys for Tots is a national organization run by volunteer current and veteran Marines and Marine Corps members. Cutway got involved with the program when he was in the Marine Corps at Camp Platoon and has never stopped. With his goals set high, he is hoping to bring Christmas joy to 8,000 children this year.

"We try to reach as many as we can," says Cutway.

But the deadline for this goal is fast approaching and with only one weekend to go, they still need more than 2,000 toys. And Cutway's motivation to reach this goal comes from the families and children who need them most.

He said, "We've got one family this year, the oldest child is five, they've never had a Christmas. They've never had a Christmas tree. They will this year. Every year, you reach more and more and you find more families out there that don't know the program exists and they actually break down and cry because somebody's there to help them."

Cutway will be camping out at the Massena Wal-Mart on Saturday and the Ogdensburg Wal-Mart on Sunday, ready to receive any last minute donations from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Toys for Tots doesn't just collect toys in the North Country. They accept new and unwrapped gifts, as well as monetary donations. To find a toy drive location in your area, go to www.toysfortots.org.
