LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Accusations of judicial misconduct have prompted a North Country judge to resign. Turin Town Court Justice James Chase has stepped down and agreed never to be a judge again, ending an investigation by the state Commission on Judicial Conduct.
The commission says that since 1999, Chase failed to follow through with suspending the drivers' licenses for more than one thousand defendants who did not come to court to answer traffic charges.
He also allegedly failed to notify the DMV commissioner about unpaid fines and surcharges adding up to $54,000.
Chase served as justice since 1998, but his term limits would have expired on December 31st.
