NORTH COUNTRY -- As the year draws to a close, so does navigation on the St. Lawrence Seaway. Although weather conditions are still favorable for ships, the Seaway has to plan ahead for the closing of the shipping season to allow for customers to prepare.

Shippers can still transit the Montreal to Lake Ontario section up until midnight on December 29th, but must have a prior written agreement to operate after midnight on December 24th.

The season is ending with an overall increase of several hundred ship transits of the system and an increase in bulk cargo tonnage. The Seaway Management Corporation has also announced a Christmas present for customers next year. Tolls will be frozen at current rates for the 2012 season to encourage more traffic in the system.

The St. Lawrence Seaway system supports more than 225,000 jobs and generates billions of dollars in revenues annually.
