JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Jefferson County has taken matters into its own hands when it comes to the future of air service at its airport.

County lawmakers decided to buy out the company that currently handles things like fuel delivery, hangar space and other general services at the Watertown International Airport. That company's owner, Tom Brouty, told the county he wanted to retire, so the county offered to buy it out, so it could have a say in who ran the services in the future.

"It remains to be seen whether we'll remain in that business for a while or hand it off and contract that out, but we really needed to get a hold of that agreement and rework that," Jefferson County Legislator Barry Ormsby said.

The buyout will cost the county about a million-and-a-half dollars, but lawmakers say it won't be long before it pays for itself.
