JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- A large cattle barn is destroyed by a fire in Jefferson County. It started around 10 p.m. Tuesday in a barn on County Route 47 in the Town of Champion.

Fire officials say a majority of the structure was engulfed in flames by the time they arrived. They were able to get three cows out of the barn safely, but they're unsure how many other cows were lost in the fire.

Officials say the location of the barn made battling the flames even more difficult.

"It was a remote location, and getting set up and getting the water here, we don't have a hydrant in front of the structure, per se, so we had to truck the water in from approximately a mile away," said Asst. Fire Chief Tim Thomas.

One firefighter twisted his knee and was taken to Carthage Area Hospital for treatment.
