NORTH COUNTRY, N.Y. -- The Mark's Law bill has been approved by a Senate committee, bringing it one step closer to becoming a law.
The bill, introduced by State Senator Patty Ritchie, would increase the maximum charge for killing an on-duty first responder be charged with first degree murder.
The Codes Committee approved the bill on Wednesday, which was started in memory of Mark Davis, an emergency medical technician who was shot to death while responding to a call in Cape Vincent in 2009.
The new bill amends the penal law to include emergency responders, firefighters and any member of a first response team, as victims of first degree murder.
Under current law, the maximum charge the killer could face is second degree murder.
