MASSENA, N.Y. -- The old General Motors plant in Massena has been torn down and is getting ready for phase two of remediation.

The North Country Redevelopment Task Force held an open discussion on Thursday to see where this project stands.

Currently, the 265 acre plot is owned by the Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response Trust, also known as RACER. They are responsible for finding buyers for the property, but the task force says with the level of pollution on the site, a new buyer would not be able to begin construction until about 2013.

"I think the best possible scenario would be us to see that site redeveloped for commercial purposes, for several hundred more jobs to be placed at that site, for people to be able to go back to work and for tax revenue to be generated for our community," said Joseph Gray, Massena Town Supervisor.

Phase two of the project will include the destruction of the concrete slab from where the plant once stood and begin to work on the polluted soil.

The Environmental Protection Agency says once remediation is finished, the value of the land will increase.

RACER says there are some potential buyers, but will not reveal how many or what they would use the land for.
