ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- It is a brutal budget process in Canton this year. Superintendent William Gregory presented his projected spending plan for the 2012-2013 school year Thursday night. He said the budget is more than $24 million, but it comes with a $2.5 million gap.
The district expects to make extensive cuts to programs and personnel, likely slashing 44 positions. And because of these cuts, class sizes could increase to 30 or more students per classroom. The special education program is at risk and extra-curricular activities will likely be reduced.
