ELMIRA, N.Y. – Fifty-four percent of voters in the Elmira Central School District voted in favor of the proposed 2012-2013 budget, but it wasn't enough. A 60 percent majority was required to pass it.

The budget included a five percent tax levy increase, which meant a super majority, or 60 percent plus one, was required by voters. The $114 million budget would have cut more than 100 jobs. But now the district says deeper cuts are on the way because the district must go back to the state mandated 2.61 percent tax levy increase.

"It means that the 15 jobs that we would have put back into place had this budget passed will not be filled," said ECSD School Board President Larry McGovern.

The next vote will be in 30 days and will require a simple majority to pass the budget.

District residents did vote in favor of the proposition to purchase new school buses.
