JAMESVILLE, N.Y. -- Iron men and women descended on Jamesville on Sunday morning to compete in the third annual Ironman 70.3 Syracuse event. The race kicked off with a 1.2 mile swim through the Jamesville Reservoir, followed by a 56 mile bike ride through Highland Forest and the surrounding area, and capped off by a 13.1 mile run that ended back at Jamesville Beach Park.

With about 1,800 competitors and 1,000 volunteers, it takes a lot of work to make sure everything runs smoothly.

"There's some volunteers that work a job that only takes two or three hours, and they'll sign up and say I'll come and help with this in the morning, and they end up staying all day. So they can be here, some of them, from 4:00 in the morning to 5:00 at night," said Jim Szczygiel, Ironman Syracuse director.

According to organizers, Syracuse is one of just a handful of cities to host both Ironman and Irongirl competitions. This year's Irongirl is scheduled for August 5 at Oneida Shores Park.
