FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- It looked and sounded like a Hollywood movie set, but at Fort Drum, practicing an air assault is part of the normal training for 10th Mountain Division soldiers.
Thursday, the public got to see what the troops do as part of their deployments. They witnessed a mock scenario involving insurgents, troops and helicopters, where the soldiers eventually take someone into custody.
It allowed the public to see the high degree of flying skills and coordination needed in a war zone.
“This MountainFest gives us an opportunity to show off, or showcase those capabilities and all the great things our soldiers do every day and this operation is really very typical of a training day or training week here at Fort Drum, so the skills we practice were something that we’ll be practicing in a few weeks as we get ready for upcoming employments,” Lt. Col. Sean Bernabe said.
MountainFest is the annual week-long event at Fort Drum that offers a number of activities for families leading up to the July 4th holiday leave time.
