JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Sunday’s early morning barn fire in the Jefferson County town of Rutland continues to be a nuisance for firefighters. Several departments were called back to the scene Monday, to once again extinguish the smoldering hay left from the barn.

The fire had spread to brush in the area, burning toward a nearby corn field. Fire crews were able to contain the fire for a third time.

The hot, dry weather could be the contributing factor for the rekindling.

“It’s tying up a lot of manpower, a lot of water, you know. We’re just going to do the best we can to keep it contained so it doesn't spread to the farm crops and try to keep it within its boundaries just the way it is now," Felts Mills Fire Chief Don Gills said.

State Police are asking if anyone noticed anything suspicious in the area of the barn on Ridge Road at around 1:15 a.m. Sunday to call investigators at (315) 782-3691.
