OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- Operators at the Nine Mile nuclear plant in Scriba shut down one of the site's two nuclear reactors Thursday morning after a problem with "condenser vacuum" levels.

NRC officials say the unit two reactor was shut down after staff discovered the failure of a steam regulator that resulted in a decrease of the vacuum levels inside the condenser.

An NRC inspector monitored the controlled shut down and did not identify any concerns with operator response or equipment performance.

Officials say the reactor will remain in cold shut-down status while repairs are made.

This is the second time unit two has been shut down in less than a month. On June 21st, a small fire on a feed-pump forced the reactor to be taken offline.
