UTICA, N.Y. -- Going green is paying off for one Utica business. The city's F.X . Matt Brewing Company saw nearly half of its investment in energy-saving systems returned thanks to an incentive program from National Grid.

The utility company presented Matt's with a check for $414,640, almost half of the $1 million in improvements the company made.

National Grid says these steps will have the yearly environmental impact of removing about 216 cars from the road.

Chairman Nick Matt says improvements included boiler control upgrades, a new keg line, steam pipe insulation and a farewell to one of the older features of the brewery.

"This is an older facility and we have lights that go back probably to the turn of the century and when I'm talking turn of the century, it might go back to the previous century. So those are some pretty old lights and we've upgraded a whole series of lights throughout the building," said Matt.

National Grid officials say the program is open to both commercial and residential customers and is aimed at making it easier for new businesses to set up in New York.
