TRUXTON, N.Y. -- A Cortland County man is being charged with the murder of his wife. The woman's body was found while police were conducting a missing persons investigation.

Troopers said the body of Janet Pottorff, 53, was discovered Friday at her home on Dog Hollow Road in Truxton. According to the medical examiner's report, she died of asphyxiation. However, authorities are not saying how long Pottorff had been missing.

Her husband, Keith Pottorff, 44, was taken into custody following an investigation. He has been charged with second degree murder. State Police are still investigating any potential motive. They are asking anyone who may know more about the homicide to contact them at (607) 756-5604.

Meanwhile, Janet's co-workers at Cortland Regional Medical Center are expressing their condolences following the tragedy. The hospital's spokesman said she worked in the medical surgical unit for the past 18 years.

He would not comment on whether the hospital reported her missing, but did say they were shocked and saddened by her death. He offered this statement, "During the time Janet worked here, she provided compassionate care to many people in the Cortland area. She was a valuable member of our nursing team."
