NEW YORK -- Today marks one year since New York became the sixth and largest state to legalize same-sex marriage. The bill passed the state Senate the night of June 24, 2011 and went into effect one month later.

Thousands of same-sex couples have gotten married in the past year, but it's tough to gauge exactly how many, since applications for marriage licenses don't require people to identify gender.

Don Grandchamp and David Janulis were among the first couples to get married, doing so shortly after midnight last year.

"I couldn't wait," said Janulis. "We waited a long time for this and finally it happened, and I wanted to be right there."

"He likes to be part of things," said Grandchamp.

"Yeah," Janulis said. "It's part of history, really."

The couple is celebrating their first anniversary with a trip to Atlantic City.
