BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Binghamton City Council members voted on two resolutions aimed at fighting crime. Councilors voted to allow the city to enter an agreement with the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services for Operation Impact and approved the application for a $50,000 Explosive Canine Team Grant from the New York State Division of Homeland Security.

"This evening we voted on two resolutions for the Binghamton Police Department to address strategic planning for crime prevention services. We have applied for a grant for community impact funds. The second one we applied for a grant, the police department applied for a canine unit for help with explosives detection and we’re hoping to get that grant as well," said Lea Webb, (D) Binghamton City Council.

The Binghamton Police Department currently has four K9 units. Handler and dog teams search for criminals and missing persons, retrieve evidence, and more.
