ELMIRA, N.Y. --The New York State Commissioner of Education, Dr. John King Jr., was in Elmira Tuesday morning, addressing more than a hundred members of the district's teachers and administrators.
The Elmira City School District is holding its sixth annual leadership week and the commissioner was in town discussing the state's common core learning standards.
King says the goal in the state is to get students college and career ready. He addressed the kinds of changes in instruction in the classroom that will help teachers meet that goal.
The commissioner acknowledged that the reorganization plan will bring challenges to the district, but says it may ultimately benefit students in the long run.
"There's an opportunity through the reorganization to re-imagine what each school will look like and to create a culture at each school that really supports each students’ college and career success," King Jr. said.
The first part of Elmira City School District reorganization plan will take effect in the upcoming school year with the partnering of elementary schools.
