FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- The soldiers of Fort Drum are getting the rare chance to do something they haven't been able to in over a decade: A full scale division training exercise on post.
With each Drum brigade now home, more than 10,000 soldiers are spending the next two weeks out on the training fields and ranges of what's known as Mountain Peak. It gives young leaders the chance to hone their skills and at the same time, it allows every unit on post to work together in maneuver efforts.
Mountain Peak begins with platoon-sized exercises and eventually ends with a few days of Force on Force, where the conditions on post will be treated exactly like they would be in Afghanistan.
"It has such a depth to it. You can simultaneously work so many things ranging from the individual soldier who's moving through the woods with this weapon carrying it properly, to the battalion or BCT operations center or the division operations center across the board, all together at the same time," said Maj. Brian Ducote, 3rd BCT Operatives Officer.
This training is a precursor to what will happen during each brigade's joint training rotation at Fort Polk, Louisiana that most soldiers take before deploying.
