ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Syracuse police have arrested a man they say hit a detective with a car. It happened at Drivers Village in Cicero early Tuesday morning.

Police say detectives were there investigating a string of larcenies in the city. One of the detectives, Michael Arduini, approached a suspect, who drove at him. Arduini fired two shots, hitting the vehicle, before he was knocked backwards.

The driver has been identified by police as Gavin Ballog, 22, of Syracuse. He's now charged with attempted aggravated assault on police officer, second degree assault, grand larceny and criminal possession of weapon.

The police chief says this incident shows that officers never know when something will happen on the job.

"In this particular case we're talking about the larceny of tires and rims from a vehicle and then it rose to the level of a deadly physical force situation, where one of our detectives could have likely been seriously injured and killed," said Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler.

The chief says three other people were in the car at the time of the incident, including a 15-year-old who is not being identified. The others, 17-year-old Marcus Rodriguez and 39-year-old Edwin Rodriguez, have been charged with grand larceny.
