ELMIRA, N.Y. -- In an effort to help residents without power, the Salvation Army has dispatched its mobile disaster assistance van into Elmira.
People in need of food or water can stop by the van, which is parked outside of the Salvation Army headquarters at 414 Lake Street. The distribution will remain open until 8 p.m. Friday.
Workers are waiting to see what progress is made before deciding on times and locations for Saturday.
"Since we're in the aftermath ,we still have a lot of neighbors who don't have power and won't have power for some time, so providing them with some sort of hot food will be a plus for them," said Salvation Army Major Craig Haggerty.
Right after the storm hit, the Salvation Army mobilized to provide food and water to the first responders as they assessed damage and cleared roads from downed trees and power lines.
