ELMIRA, N.Y. -- NYSEG crews are making progress restoring power following Thursday's severe weather. The utility said about 95 percent of customers have had service restored. As of Sunday morning, there were still about 3,600 people still without power in NYSEG's Elmira division.

The company said most of those customers should have power back by midnight. Meanwhile, the cleanup is far from over around Elmira. Crews have been out with machines and chainsaws, clearing away debris and trees leftover from the tornado. Officials said 16 residential properties were severely damaged and most likely uninhabitable.

Another 200 homes sustained moderate damage, but are liveable, and several hundred more sustained minor damage. NYSEG will continue to distribute bottled water and dry ice at Ernie Davis Middle School and at New Beginnings Methodist Church through 8:00 p.m., or until supplies run out. The company said it has distributed nearly 76,000 pounds of dry ice and more than 2,600 cases of bottled water to Elmira-area customers.
